Dyneema® Composite Fabric

The CrossPeak 2 uses Dyneema® Composite Fabric for both its canopy and floor, giving the shelter a combination of low weight, waterproof protection, and durability.

The 0.55 DCF canopy keeps the upper portion of the shelter extremely light, while the heavier 0.96 DCF floor provides additional protection where the tent is most exposed to abrasion and ground contact.

One of the advantages of DCF is that it doesn’t absorb water like traditional nylon. That means the fabric doesn’t gain as much weight when wet, and it won’t stretch significantly when exposed to rain.

For a tent weighing just 34 ounces complete, using DCF throughout the shelter is a major part of how Hyperlite Mountain Gear achieves its weight-to-protection ratio.

Freestanding Design

The CrossPeak 2’s biggest distinction is its freestanding architecture.

Instead of relying on trekking poles or a stake-dependent pitch, the tent uses a dedicated DAC Featherlite NFL 8.7 mm aluminum pole system. The structure can stand on its own, making it considerably easier to pitch on rocky ground, root-filled campsites, tent platforms, or other locations where getting stakes into the ground can be difficult.

The external 20D Sil-Nylon pole sleeves also contribute to the structure’s strength. Rather than relying entirely on lightweight plastic clips, the sleeves provide a continuous connection between the poles and tent body.

The result is a shelter that feels more substantial and predictable in challenging conditions without moving far outside ultralight territory.

Space & Livability

The CrossPeak 2 offers 28.4 square feet of interior floor space, with an 88-inch length, 48-inch head width, and 45-inch foot width.

The 48-inch head width is enough to accommodate two wide sleeping pads, while the 42-inch peak height provides useful sitting room inside the tent.

Two 22-inch-deep vestibules provide a combined 14.52 square feet of protected storage space. Each occupant gets a dedicated entry and gear-storage area, making the tent much easier to share than a two-person shelter with a single door.

For solo backpackers, the same dimensions provide a particularly comfortable amount of space without the weight penalty normally associated with a larger freestanding tent.

Ventilation & Condensation

The CrossPeak 2 is a fully enclosed tent, but Hyperlite Mountain Gear has incorporated several ways to manage airflow.

There are vents at both doors along with adjustable ventilation at the head and foot ends of the shelter. These allow you to increase airflow when conditions are favorable and close things down when additional weather protection is needed.

Like any enclosed shelter, condensation can still occur in cool, humid, or still conditions. The adjustable ventilation gives you more control over airflow and helps reduce moisture buildup without requiring you to sacrifice the protection of a fully enclosed tent.

Storm Protection

The CrossPeak 2 is designed as a three-season tent, but its construction goes beyond simply minimizing weight.

Reinforced guy-out points, strong aluminum poles, external pole sleeves, and the waterproof DCF canopy give the shelter a solid structure for exposed campsites and unpredictable weather.

In more demanding conditions, trekking poles can also be used as additional structural support in the vestibules and at designated reinforcement points. This isn’t necessary for normal setup, but it gives backpackers another option when additional stability is needed.

It’s still a three-season shelter rather than a mountaineering or winter tent, but the design gives the CrossPeak 2 a substantial margin of stability for its weight.

What Is The CrossPeak 2 Best For?

The CrossPeak 2 is designed for backpackers who want an ultralight shelter without giving up the convenience of a freestanding design.

It’s particularly well suited to:

  • Two-person backpacking
  • Solo hikers who want extra interior space
  • Three-season trips
  • Rocky or root-filled campsites
  • Tent platforms and established campsites
  • Exposed backcountry camps
  • Hikers who prefer dedicated tent poles over trekking-pole shelters

At 34 ounces complete, it’s also light enough to split between two hikers. Each person can carry roughly half of the shelter weight, making the freestanding design much less of a burden in a shared backpacking setup.

The Tradeoff

The CrossPeak 2’s biggest tradeoff is that it’s heavier than a minimalist trekking-pole shelter.

At 34 ounces, it carries more weight than something like the Hyperlite Mountain Gear Unbound 2, which achieves a lower weight by eliminating the dedicated pole system and using a trekking-pole-supported design.

But that’s exactly where the CrossPeak 2 earns its place.

The dedicated aluminum poles make setup simpler and allow the shelter to stand without depending on trekking poles. The freestanding design also makes it much easier to deal with rocky ground, tent platforms, and other difficult campsites.

You’re carrying more weight, but you’re getting a more traditional tent experience in return.

Rikkar Take

The Hyperlite Mountain Gear CrossPeak 2 is a great example of how ultralight gear doesn’t always have to mean going with the absolute lightest option.

At 34 ounces complete, it isn’t Hyperlite Mountain Gear’s most minimalist two-person shelter, but it offers something the lighter trekking-pole designs can’t: a genuinely freestanding, fully enclosed tent with dedicated aluminum poles.

The combination of Dyneema® Composite Fabric, DAC aluminum poles, two vestibules, two doors, and 28.4 square feet of interior space gives the CrossPeak 2 a particularly strong balance of weight and livability.

We especially like it for backpackers who regularly encounter rocky campsites or tent platforms, where the ability to pitch a freestanding shelter can be worth a few additional ounces.

For two hikers, the 34-ounce total weight is also easy to justify when split between two packs. And for a solo backpacker, the CrossPeak 2 offers a surprisingly comfortable amount of space without becoming a heavy shelter.

If you want an ultralight tent but don’t want your shelter to depend on trekking poles, the CrossPeak 2 is one of the most compelling options in its class.
