Compatibility
The Blackbelt is designed for packs including the Skala 38, Kumo 36, Fast Kumo, Grit 28, Loris 25, Cima 15, Vagabond Jet, Minimalist 19, Aero Jet, and RikSak.
It is also technically compatible with the Mariposa and Gorilla, but Gossamer Gear does not recommend replacing their PVT belt with the Blackbelt because doing so can negatively affect the packs’ weight-transfer performance.
Why We Like It
The Blackbelt is a good example of ultralight gear solving a specific problem without adding unnecessary material. If a pack already has a lightweight suspension and you’re carrying a relatively modest load, a simple webbing belt can provide useful stability without the weight and bulk of a padded hipbelt.
The Tradeoff
There’s very little padding or structure here, so the Blackbelt isn’t intended to make a heavy load comfortable. Its advantage is precisely that it does less, which means hikers carrying more weight may be better served by a more substantial belt or suspension system.
Rikkar Take
A good choice when you’re trying to keep a lightweight pack lightweight and don’t need a heavily padded hipbelt. The Blackbelt makes the most sense for hikers using a compatible Gossamer Gear pack, carrying relatively light loads, and looking for a little additional stability without adding much weight.
