- Versatile camp gear: Doubles as a sit pad or an insulating layer beneath an inflatable sleeping pad.
Why We Like It
The Z Lite SOL is about reliability and simplicity. There’s no valve to fail, no air chamber to puncture, and no time spent inflating your pad after a long day on the trail. It also works exceptionally well as a backup layer beneath an inflatable pad, adding insulation and protection against punctures.
The Tradeoff
At just 0.75 inches thick, cushioning is limited compared with modern inflatable pads. Its accordion-fold design is convenient, but the folded pad takes up considerable space on the outside of your pack. With an R-value of 2.0, it’s also not warm enough on its own for many cold-weather trips.
Who It’s For
- Ultralight backpackers who prioritize simplicity and reliability.
- Thru-hikers who want a durable pad that can handle thousands of trail miles.
- Hikers who prefer not to worry about leaks or field repairs.
- Cold-weather campers looking to add insulation and puncture protection beneath an inflatable pad.
Rikkar Take
The Z Lite SOL isn’t the most comfortable sleeping pad, but it’s one of the most dependable. If you value a simple sleep system that won’t let you down because of a puncture, it’s a proven choice. For colder trips, we’d consider pairing it with an inflatable pad rather than relying on it alone.
