Why We Like It

The NB10000 Gen4 hits a very useful middle ground for backpacking power.

A 5,000mAh battery can be plenty for a short trip, but once you’re carrying a phone, GPS, headlamp, or other electronics for several days, having twice the capacity can make a meaningful difference.

At just 5 ounces, the NB10000 Gen4 provides that additional capacity without becoming a heavy item in your pack. The two USB-C ports also make it more convenient when you’re carrying multiple devices.

The Tradeoff

The NB10000 Gen4 isn’t the absolute lightest way to carry backup power, and using both USB-C ports at the same time limits the combined output to 15W.

The IPX7 water resistance is a major advantage for outdoor use, but this is still a lithium-ion battery. Like other power banks, it isn’t intended to be treated as an extreme-cold-weather power source.

If you’re only looking to top off a phone during a day hike or overnight trip, the smaller 3.14oz 5,000mAh NB Air option may make more sense.

Rikkar Take

For most three-season backpacking trips, the NB10000 Gen4 is the power bank we’d choose when 5,000mAh isn’t quite enough.

It offers a particularly good combination of capacity, weight, charging capability, and weather resistance without becoming a bulky piece of gear. For backpackers carrying several electronic devices—or simply wanting more charging reserve on longer trips—the extra capacity is worth the small increase in weight.
