Y-Beam Design
The Mini Groundhog uses the same fundamental Y-beam concept as the full-size Groundhog.
The three-sided aluminum profile gives the stake multiple points of contact with the surrounding soil, increasing resistance to pulling compared with a simple round stake.
This allows MSR to keep the stake relatively small and light while still providing useful holding power.
The Mini Groundhog is essentially a scaled-down version of the Groundhog philosophy: use a strong structural shape rather than simply adding more material.
For lightweight shelters, that’s an important distinction. A tiny stake can save weight, but if it doesn’t hold well enough to keep a shelter properly tensioned, the weight savings aren’t particularly useful.
Weight & Packability
At just 0.35 oz / 10 grams per stake, the Mini Groundhog is significantly lighter than the standard Groundhog.
A six-stake set weighs approximately 2.1 oz / 60 grams, making it a very reasonable choice for ultralight backpackers who want a complete set of capable aluminum stakes without adding much weight.
The 6-inch length also makes the Mini Groundhog easier to pack into small stake bags and compact shelter systems.
This makes them particularly attractive for hikers using minimalist shelters where every component has been selected around low weight and small packed volume.
The difference of a few grams per stake may not seem significant, but shelter stakes are one of those areas where small savings can add up quickly.
Strength & Durability
The Mini Groundhog is made from 7000-series aluminum, giving it a strong combination of low weight and durability.
The material is substantially more robust than the thin aluminum stakes commonly supplied with inexpensive tents, while the Y-beam construction provides additional structural support.
Like any lightweight stake, however, the Mini Groundhog isn’t designed to be hammered through rocks or driven aggressively into extremely hard ground.
The best approach is to choose a suitable location, push or carefully drive the stake into the soil, and avoid using another stake or heavy object as a hammer.
Used appropriately, the Mini Groundhog provides a very good durability-to-weight ratio.
Holding Power
The 6-inch length is where the Mini Groundhog differs most noticeably from the full-size Groundhog.
A shorter stake naturally has less surface area and penetration depth, so it won’t provide quite the same holding power as the 7.5-inch Groundhog.
That doesn’t make the Mini Groundhog weak. The Y-beam profile still provides excellent resistance in many common soil conditions.
For typical backpacking campsites with reasonably firm soil, the Mini Groundhog can provide plenty of holding power for lightweight shelters.
In loose, sandy, muddy, or extremely soft soil, however, the additional length of the standard Groundhog or a dedicated sand stake can be advantageous.
For this reason, the Mini Groundhog is best viewed as a lightweight all-around stake rather than a specialized heavy-duty anchoring solution.
Ease of Use
The Mini Groundhog is straightforward to use and benefits from several small details that make it practical in the field.
The pointed end makes it easy to place into the soil, while the Y-beam profile provides good resistance once the stake is buried.
The reflective pull loop is especially useful when breaking camp. It provides an easy place to grab the stake and makes the stakes easier to locate when packing up in low light.
The notched head also provides a secure location for attaching a guyline.
These details may seem minor, but they make a difference when you’re repeatedly setting up and breaking down a shelter during a long backpacking trip.
Mini Groundhog vs. Groundhog
The Mini Groundhog and standard Groundhog share the same basic design philosophy, but they are intended for slightly different priorities.
The Mini Groundhog is 6 inches long and weighs approximately 10 grams, while the standard Groundhog is 7.5 inches long and weighs approximately 13.95 grams.
That means the Mini saves nearly 4 grams per stake.
Across a six-stake set, that’s roughly 24 grams of savings.
The standard Groundhog gives you the advantage of additional length and therefore greater holding power, particularly in softer or more challenging soil.
For most lightweight shelters, the Mini Groundhog provides an excellent compromise.
If you’re using a large shelter, expecting strong winds, or frequently camping in loose soil, the standard Groundhog is the safer choice.
If you’re using an ultralight shelter and want to minimize your stake weight without moving to extremely minimalist stakes, the Mini Groundhog makes more sense.
What Are The Mini Groundhog Stakes Best For?
The Mini Groundhog is best suited to lightweight and ultralight backpacking shelters where low weight is important but dependable anchoring is still required.
They’re particularly useful for trekking pole tents, ultralight tents, tarps, and lightweight three-season shelters.
They’re also an excellent choice for long-distance hiking because they offer a good combination of durability and low weight without being as delicate or specialized as some ultralight titanium stakes.
For hikers who want a single stake that can handle most normal backpacking conditions, the Mini Groundhog is a particularly strong option.
They’re less ideal for extremely loose soil, sand, or situations where maximum holding power is more important than weight.
The Tradeoff
The Mini Groundhog’s main advantage is also its primary compromise: the reduced size.
At 6 inches long and 10 grams each, they’re lighter and more compact than standard Groundhogs, but they don’t provide quite as much holding power.
That difference is unlikely to matter in firm soil, but it becomes more important when the ground is loose or when a shelter is exposed to strong wind.
The Mini Groundhog also isn’t the absolute lightest stake available. Minimalist titanium stakes can weigh less, particularly for shelters that don’t require much holding power.
But those stakes often sacrifice some combination of strength, ease of use, and versatility.
The Mini Groundhog sits in the middle. It’s light enough for serious ultralight backpacking while still being substantial enough to inspire confidence.
Rikkar Take
The MSR Mini Groundhog is one of those products that gets the balance right.
At 10 grams per stake, it’s light enough to fit comfortably into an ultralight shelter system, but it doesn’t feel like a disposable piece of gear designed solely to win a weight comparison.
The 7000-series aluminum construction and Y-beam design give it legitimate strength and holding power, while the 6-inch length keeps the weight and packed size down.
We think the Mini Groundhog makes particularly good sense for backpackers using lightweight trekking pole tents and tarps. These shelters often benefit from reliable stakes because their guylines and perimeter tension are an important part of the shelter’s structure.
The main question is whether you need the additional holding power of the standard Groundhog. If you’re regularly camping in firm soil and want to save weight, the Mini is the better choice. If you’re frequently dealing with loose soil, strong winds, or larger shelters, the full-size Groundhog is worth the extra few grams.
For most three-season backpacking, though, the Mini Groundhog hits a very useful sweet spot.
It’s light, compact, strong, easy to use, and durable enough for repeated trips.
For an ultralight backpacker looking for a stake that doesn’t take the “ultralight” part too far, the Mini Groundhog is an excellent choice.
