Why We Like It
The FT3 solves a different problem than a traditional telescoping trekking pole: packability. The roughly 15-inch folded length makes it much easier to stash the poles inside a pack, travel with them, or quickly transition between hiking and sections where poles aren’t needed.
The Tradeoff
The FT3 weighs more per pole than Gossamer Gear’s LT5, and its 115–130 cm adjustment range is considerably narrower. You’re giving up some weight and adjustability in exchange for a folding design that’s faster to deploy and much more compact when stored.
Rikkar Take
The better choice for hikers who frequently need to put their poles away rather than carrying them in hand all day. For fastpacking, trail running, travel, scrambling approaches, or any trip where compact storage matters, the FT3’s folding design is worth the extra weight; for conventional backpacking with poles out most of the day, the lighter LT5 is the more compelling option.
