Sizing / Configuration

The 1 oz kit treats up to 30 gallons, while the 2 oz kit treats up to 60 gallons. For most individual backpacking trips, the smaller kit provides plenty of capacity while keeping the amount of treatment carried to a minimum.

Why We Like It

Aquamira is particularly useful when you want water treatment without moving parts. There’s no filter element to clog and no hollow-fiber filter to worry about freezing, making chemical treatment a valuable backup on trips where a filter failure or freezing temperatures could create a problem.

The Tradeoff

Chemical treatment takes time, so you can’t simply collect water and drink it immediately. The two-part process also requires mixing equal amounts of the two solutions and waiting for them to activate before treating your water, which is less convenient than a fast-flowing filter.

Rikkar Take

A lightweight and dependable alternative to mechanical filtration, especially when simplicity and backup capability matter. We’d consider Aquamira an excellent second water-treatment method for a filter-based kit, and a particularly attractive primary option for hikers who don’t mind the additional wait time.
