Why We Like It
The LT5 is refreshingly focused on the job trekking poles actually need to do: provide support without adding much weight. At just 4.9 ounces per pole, they’re light enough to disappear into a well-built ultralight kit while still giving you a conventional, full-length adjustable pole.
We also like the simplicity. The three-section design and twist-lock adjustment avoid the extra hardware and mechanisms found on some heavier or more compact folding poles.
And if you’re using a trekking-pole-supported shelter, the LT5 can do double duty. Gossamer Gear specifically notes the poles’ compatibility with its ultralight shelters, making them more useful than gear that only serves one purpose.
The Tradeoff
The LT5’s carbon construction and minimalist design keep the weight extremely low, but that low weight comes with a little less tolerance for abuse than a heavier aluminum pole. They’re a better fit for hikers who are comfortable treating ultralight gear with some care.
The 23.5-inch collapsed length is also worth considering. That’s compact enough to stash on or in a pack, but it’s noticeably longer than many folding trekking poles. If you frequently need to completely stow your poles while hiking or traveling, a folding design may be more convenient.
Rikkar Take
For conventional backpacking and thru-hiking, the LT5 is the Gossamer Gear pole we’d reach for when minimizing weight is the priority. They’re especially compelling for hikers who want a full-length adjustable trekking pole for everyday trail use and the option to use those same poles with a trekking-pole-supported shelter.
If you’re looking for the absolute smallest packed size, we’d look at a folding pole like the Gossamer Gear FT3 instead. But if you normally hike with your poles in hand and want an exceptionally light, simple, adjustable design, the LT5 is hard to argue with.
