Lightweight Food Storage

The Roll-Top Food Bag is designed to provide dedicated food storage without adding significant weight to your backpack.

At only 1.13 ounces for the 10L version and 1.36 ounces for the 15L version, it weighs considerably less than many conventional food-storage bags while still providing a structured, weather-resistant system for organizing meals and snacks.

For ultralight backpackers, that low weight is one of the biggest advantages.

Food is already one of the heavier categories of gear carried on a multi-day trip, so keeping the storage system lightweight makes sense. The Roll-Top Food Bag provides dedicated food organization without becoming another noticeable item in your pack.

Weather-Resistant Construction

The Roll-Top Food Bag uses Dyneema® Composite Fabric 1.3 with fully taped seams.

This construction helps protect food from rain and moisture while keeping the overall weight extremely low.

The roll-top closure adds another layer of protection by allowing the opening to be folded down and secured rather than relying on a conventional zipper or drawstring.

The result is a food bag that works particularly well in wet conditions where keeping your food dry and contained is important.

It is designed as a weather-resistant food storage system rather than a container intended for prolonged submersion.

Magnetic Roll-Top Closure

The magnetic roll-top closure is one of the most distinctive features of the Roll-Top Food Bag.

Magnets help guide the top into position as you close the bag, making it quick and straightforward to secure.

Once rolled, the side-release buckles keep the closure in place and provide a secure connection around the top of the bag.

The design also allows the bag to accommodate different amounts of food. You can roll the closure down farther when the bag isn’t completely full, helping keep the contents contained without requiring a separate compression system.

Easy Food Loading

The Roll-Top Food Bag features a flat bottom that allows it to stand upright while you’re loading it.

This is a surprisingly useful detail when organizing food for a backpacking trip.

Instead of holding a floppy bag open with one hand while trying to load food with the other, the flat bottom gives the bag enough structure to remain upright.

It also makes packing more efficient because food can be loaded vertically and the bag can be placed directly into your backpack without collapsing around the contents.

Bear-Hang Ready

Integrated O-rings provide a central hanging point for use with a compatible bear-hanging system.

The Roll-Top Food Bag can be paired with the Hyperlite Mountain Gear Rock Bag and an appropriate bear-hanging line to suspend food away from camp and wildlife.

This makes the bag more than just a waterproof food sack. It can form part of a lightweight backcountry food-storage system designed specifically for hanging food.

The O-ring attachment points are integrated into the bag rather than requiring additional hardware to be added separately.

10L Size

The 10L Roll-Top Food Bag weighs just 1.13 ounces / 32 grams and measures 9 x 5.5 x 14 inches.

This size is well suited to shorter trips and hikers who don’t need to carry a large quantity of food.

For a single hiker carrying food for a shorter backpacking trip, the 10L provides a useful balance between capacity and packability.

It can also work well for hikers who prefer to keep their food system compact and replenish supplies more frequently during longer trips.

15L Size

The 15L Roll-Top Food Bag weighs 1.36 ounces / 39 grams and measures 10.5 x 6.5 x 15 inches.

The additional capacity makes it a better choice for longer trips or hikers carrying more calorie-dense food.

It provides more room for multi-day food supplies while still maintaining an extremely low weight.

The 15L can also be useful for groups where one person is responsible for carrying a larger portion of the shared food supply.

Food Organization

Keeping food in a dedicated bag helps separate it from the rest of your backpacking gear.

Meals, snacks, cooking ingredients, and other food items can all be kept together, making it easier to manage your food supply throughout a trip.

The bag’s relatively structured shape also makes it easier to pack food efficiently.

Rather than scattering individual food bags throughout the backpack, you can organize everything into one central storage system and remove it from the pack when it’s time to cook or set up camp.

What Is The Roll-Top Food Bag Best For?

The Hyperlite Mountain Gear Roll-Top Food Bag is particularly useful for:

Backpacking
Thru-hiking
Fastpacking
Multi-day hiking
Lightweight camping
Single-day food storage
Multi-day food storage
Bear hanging
Wet-weather trips
Organizing meals and snacks
Backcountry food storage
Ultralight backpacking

10L: Best for shorter trips, solo hikers carrying a smaller food supply, or hikers who prefer a compact food-storage system.

15L: Best for longer trips, larger food supplies, or hikers carrying food for multiple people.

The Tradeoff

The main tradeoff with the Roll-Top Food Bag is that it is designed specifically around lightweight food storage rather than serving as a general-purpose dry bag.

Its extremely low weight is a major advantage, but the bag isn’t intended to replace a rigid bear canister where regulations require one.

It’s also worth remembering that the bag itself doesn’t make food inaccessible to wildlife. In areas where food must be stored in a bear-resistant container, the appropriate regulations and local food-storage requirements still take priority.

For areas where a properly executed bear hang is appropriate, however, the integrated O-rings make the Roll-Top Food Bag particularly well suited to a lightweight hanging system.

The other consideration is capacity. The 10L and 15L sizes cover a wide range of backpacking trips, but hikers carrying especially large food loads may need multiple bags or a larger food-storage solution.

Rikkar Take

The Hyperlite Mountain Gear Roll-Top Food Bag takes a basic piece of backpacking equipment and makes it remarkably lightweight and functional.

We particularly like the combination of the flat bottom and magnetic roll-top closure. The bag is easy to load, easy to close, and easy to pack, which makes food organization much less frustrating at camp.

The integrated O-rings are another major advantage. If you’re using a traditional bear-hanging system where permitted, the bag can become part of a lightweight food-storage setup rather than simply sitting inside your backpack.

The weight is also hard to ignore. At just 32 grams for the 10L and 39 grams for the 15L, you’re getting a dedicated food-storage bag without adding much to your base weight.

The choice between the two sizes is straightforward. The 10L makes sense for shorter trips and smaller food loads, while the 15L gives you more room for longer adventures or larger food supplies.

It’s not a bear canister, and it shouldn’t be treated as one where regulations require a certified bear-resistant container. But for trips where food hanging is an appropriate storage method, the Roll-Top Food Bag is a thoughtfully designed ultralight solution.

For backpackers who want a dedicated, weather-resistant food bag that integrates easily into a lightweight bear-hanging system, the Roll-Top Food Bag is an excellent addition to an organized backcountry setup.
