ClearSkiesâ„¢ Fabric

The biggest update to the current version of The Two is Gossamer Gear’s new ClearSkiesâ„¢ shelter fabric.

ClearSkies combines a lightweight 15D recycled Robic nylon base with a 20D dope-dyed ripstop grid designed to improve tear resistance and durability without giving up the weight savings that make The Two an ultralight shelter. An advanced silicone and PU coating creates a highly water-resistant barrier while keeping the fabric remarkably light.

The result is a fabric rated to 4,923 mm of hydrostatic head, providing substantially greater water resistance while maintaining the low weight that makes The Two appealing to ultralight backpackers.

Space & Livability

Where The Two really separates itself from many ultralight shelters is how much usable space it provides for its weight.

The 26-square-foot floor gives two hikers enough room to sleep comfortably, while the 48-inch head width and 42-inch foot width provide practical sleeping space for two people. The 49-inch peak height also gives plenty of room to sit up and move around inside.

Two doors and two vestibules are particularly useful when sharing the tent. Each person gets their own entrance and protected gear storage, eliminating the need for one person to climb over the other to get in or out.

Ventilation & Condensation

Like any single-wall shelter, The Two can experience condensation under the right conditions. The design addresses this with two retractable ridge vents that allow you to increase airflow through the shelter.

Open the vents on calmer nights to encourage airflow, or close them down when heavier weather rolls in.

The vents don’t eliminate the basic condensation characteristics of a single-wall tent, but they give both occupants more control over airflow and moisture management.

Setup & The Fritsch Hitch

The Two uses the same trekking-pole philosophy that makes Gossamer Gear’s shelters so appealing to ultralight backpackers.

Two trekking poles set to approximately 125 cm provide the structure, meaning hikers who already carry trekking poles don’t need to add dedicated tent poles to their pack.

The integrated Fritsch Hitch guyline system also makes it easier to fine-tune the pitch and maximize usable space. The highly adjustable design is particularly useful when setting up on uneven ground.

What Is The Two Best For?

The Two is designed primarily for two-person backpacking, ultralight thru-hiking, fast-and-light trips, and three-season adventures where shelter weight is a major consideration.

It’s especially well suited to hiking partners who already carry trekking poles and want to use them for their shelter rather than carrying a separate pole system.

At just over 30 ounces complete, The Two also makes a compelling choice for solo hikers who want an exceptionally spacious shelter without stepping up to the weight of a conventional two-person tent.

The Tradeoff

The Two is a single-wall trekking pole tent, so its low weight comes with a few compromises.

It requires two trekking poles or a dedicated pole set for setup, and pitching it properly takes a little more attention than a conventional freestanding tent. Single-wall construction also means condensation can be more noticeable in cool, humid, or still conditions, even with the improved ventilation.

The upside is substantial: at 30.5 ounces complete, you get a genuine two-person shelter with two doors, two vestibules, 26 square feet of floor space, and 4,923 mm of hydrostatic head water resistance.

For hikers who prioritize weight savings, that’s a very attractive tradeoff.

Rikkar Take

The Gossamer Gear The Two is one of the more compelling options for backpacking partners who want to keep their shelter weight firmly in ultralight territory without giving up the basic comforts that make sharing a tent enjoyable.

The new ClearSkiesâ„¢ fabric makes the 2026 version particularly interesting. Improved strength and substantially higher water resistance address two of the biggest concerns with extremely lightweight shelter fabrics, while the overall shelter remains just 28.15 ounces.

Add two doors, two vestibules, dual ventilation, a highly adjustable pitch, and 26 square feet of interior space, and The Two manages to offer a surprising amount of shelter for its weight.

At 30.5 ounces complete, it’s the kind of tent that makes sense for two hikers splitting shelter weight—or for a solo backpacker who wants an exceptionally roomy ultralight setup.

If you’re already carrying trekking poles and want to keep your shelter comfortably below two pounds, The Two is a particularly strong fit.
