Weight & Packability

At 2.9 ounces, the PocketRocket Deluxe remains firmly in ultralight backpacking territory.

It is only slightly heavier than the PocketRocket 2, but that small weight increase buys several useful features, most notably the integrated piezoelectric igniter and pressure regulator.

The folding pot supports allow the stove to collapse into a compact package that can easily fit inside many backpacking pots alongside a small fuel canister and other cooking accessories.

For a solo backpacker, the PocketRocket Deluxe can form the centerpiece of an extremely compact cooking system.

This is where the Deluxe makes a lot of sense. You’re not carrying a large stove simply to gain additional features. Instead, MSR has added useful functionality while keeping the overall package small enough for serious lightweight backpacking.

Pressure Regulation

One of the biggest advantages of the PocketRocket Deluxe over a basic canister stove is its pressure regulator.

As fuel is consumed and the pressure inside a canister changes, an unregulated stove can experience changes in flame strength and performance. The pressure regulator helps maintain more consistent fuel delivery as the canister empties.

This can be particularly useful when you’re cooking repeatedly throughout a trip or operating in colder conditions where canister pressure can become less favorable.

It doesn’t turn the PocketRocket Deluxe into a dedicated winter stove, but it gives the burner more consistent performance across changing fuel levels and conditions.

For backpackers who want predictable stove performance rather than simply the lowest possible weight, the regulator is one of the Deluxe’s most meaningful upgrades.

Burner Performance

The PocketRocket Deluxe produces a nominal heat output of 3.5 kW / 250 g/h.

That’s plenty of power for typical backpacking cooking tasks, including rapidly boiling water for dehydrated meals, hot drinks, oatmeal, and other trail food.

The burner head is also designed to produce a broader flame pattern than the very small burner found on many minimalist canister stoves.

This helps distribute heat across the bottom of the cookware rather than concentrating it in an extremely small area.

That makes the Deluxe particularly useful if you occasionally cook rather than simply boil water.

For simple freeze-dried meals, the stove has more than enough power. For actual cooking, the combination of the broad burner and adjustable flame gives you substantially more control.

Simmering & Cooking

The PocketRocket Deluxe isn’t just a water-boiling machine.

The adjustable flame control allows you to reduce the output significantly when cooking foods that need gentle, consistent heat.

That’s useful for meals such as rice, pasta, sauces, oatmeal, or anything else that can easily scorch when exposed to a full-power backpacking stove flame.

The broader burner head also helps distribute the heat over the cookware.

This makes the Deluxe a particularly good choice for backpackers who don’t want to limit themselves to boiling water. It’s still extremely compact, but it offers enough control to function as a genuine cooking stove.

For a backpacker who occasionally prepares more elaborate meals in camp, that additional control can be worth more than saving the few grams associated with a simpler stove.

Piezoelectric Igniter

The integrated piezoelectric igniter is one of the easiest features to appreciate.

Instead of reaching for a lighter every time you want to start the stove, you can use the built-in igniter to light the burner.

This is especially convenient when you’re cooking in bad weather or wearing gloves.

It also means the stove is immediately ready to use once it’s connected to the fuel canister.

That said, we would still recommend carrying a backup lighter or other reliable ignition source on any backpacking trip. Piezoelectric igniters are convenient, but like any mechanical component, they can eventually fail.

The important distinction is that the lighter becomes a backup rather than your primary ignition method.

Pot Supports

The PocketRocket Deluxe uses folding pot supports that lock into position when deployed and fold inward for storage.

The supports are designed for appropriately sized backpacking cookware, with MSR specifying a maximum cookware diameter of 8 inches and maximum cookware weight of 8 pounds.

For typical backpacking pots, this provides a stable cooking platform without requiring a bulky stove base.

The folding design also keeps the stove compact enough to pack inside a cooking pot or small stove bag.

As with any canister-mounted stove, stability is important. The stove and fuel canister should always be placed on a solid, level surface before cooking.

Fuel System

The PocketRocket Deluxe connects directly to threaded isobutane/propane fuel canisters.

MSR specifies use with its 80% isobutane / 20% propane fuel mixture and EN 417-compatible canisters.

The direct-to-canister design keeps the cooking system simple.

There is no remote fuel hose, separate burner stand, or liquid-fuel bottle to manage. The stove screws directly onto the canister, the pot supports unfold, and you’re ready to cook.

This simplicity is one of the main reasons top-mounted canister stoves remain so popular for three-season backpacking.

Wind Performance

The PocketRocket Deluxe’s broad burner and regulated fuel delivery help it perform well for its size, but it is still a compact top-mounted canister stove.

Wind can reduce burner efficiency and increase cooking times.

The best solution is to select a naturally protected cooking location rather than attempting to surround the stove with a traditional windscreen.

MSR specifically warns against using a windscreen with the PocketRocket Deluxe because trapping heat around the fuel canister can create a dangerous situation.

This is an important consideration when comparing the Deluxe with remote-canister systems. The Deluxe is designed around simplicity and low weight, not maximum wind protection.

Ease of Use

The PocketRocket Deluxe is extremely straightforward to operate.

Attach it to the compatible fuel canister, unfold the pot supports, open the valve slightly, and use the integrated piezoelectric igniter to light the burner.

Once lit, the flame adjuster provides precise control over the heat output.

The pressure regulator works automatically, so there’s no additional adjustment required from the user.

For backpackers who don’t want to think much about their stove system, this is a major advantage.

There are very few individual components to manage, and the stove can go from packed away to cooking in a matter of moments.

What Is The PocketRocket Deluxe Best For?

The PocketRocket Deluxe is best suited to backpackers who want a lightweight stove with more convenience and performance than a basic canister burner.

It’s particularly well suited to solo and two-person backpacking, thru-hiking, weekend trips, and lightweight three-season camping.

It’s also an excellent choice for backpackers who actually cook their meals rather than simply boiling water.

The broad burner, adjustable flame, and pressure regulator make it more versatile than a minimalist boil-only stove.

The integrated igniter is another major advantage for frequent use, especially for hikers who value convenience and don’t want to reach for a lighter every time they cook.

For someone building a lightweight but relatively refined cooking system, the PocketRocket Deluxe is a very compelling middle ground.

The Tradeoff

The PocketRocket Deluxe’s primary tradeoff is that it costs a little more and weighs a little more than simpler backpacking stoves.

At 2.9 ounces, it is still very light, but there are minimalist stoves that weigh less.

The piezoelectric igniter and pressure regulator add both weight and complexity compared with the simplest possible canister burner.

The integrated igniter can also eventually fail, which is why carrying a backup ignition source remains a good idea.

The stove is also not designed for large cookware or extremely windy conditions. Its 8-inch maximum cookware diameter and direct-to-canister design make it best suited to normal backpacking pots rather than large camp cookware.

But these compromises are relatively minor.

You’re adding only a small amount of weight to get substantially more convenience and better overall stove performance.

Safety

The PocketRocket Deluxe is a powerful open-flame appliance and must be used outdoors only.

Never operate the stove inside a tent, shelter, vehicle, home, or other enclosed space. The stove can produce carbon monoxide and presents serious fire and explosion hazards.

The stove should be placed on a solid, stable, level surface, and combustible materials should be kept well away from the burner.

MSR also specifies that users should never use a windscreen around the stove or expose the fuel canister to excessive heat.

The Deluxe should be disconnected from the fuel canister before storage, and the fuel canister should be stored away from heat and ignition sources.

These precautions are especially important with a compact canister stove because the fuel container is directly beneath the burner.

Rikkar Take

The MSR PocketRocket Deluxe is the stove we’d point to when someone wants a backpacking stove that is still ultralight but doesn’t feel stripped down.

At 2.9 ounces, it remains extremely easy to carry, yet it adds several features that make everyday use noticeably better than a basic stove.

The pressure regulator is particularly valuable. It helps maintain more consistent performance as fuel pressure changes, while the broad burner provides a useful flame pattern for actual cooking.

Then there’s the piezoelectric igniter.

It’s a small feature, but being able to simply turn the valve and click the igniter rather than reaching for a lighter makes the stove feel considerably more refined.

We also like that MSR hasn’t sacrificed simplicity to achieve those features. The Deluxe still connects directly to a standard threaded canister, folds into a compact package, and provides plenty of power for normal backpacking cooking.

The main reason to choose the PocketRocket 2 instead would be if you’re focused primarily on saving weight and don’t care about the integrated igniter or pressure regulator.

But for a relatively small increase in weight, the Deluxe gives you a more capable and convenient cooking system.

For backpackers who want an ultralight stove without going all the way to the most minimalist option, the PocketRocket Deluxe hits an excellent sweet spot.

It’s compact, powerful, easy to use, capable of real cooking, and refined enough that you won’t spend the trip wishing you’d brought something better.
